Joe Paul Best, 61, passed away Tuesday at Wayne-UNC Healthcare after several years of declining health.

He was born in Wayne County to the late Charles Graham and Jessie Tucker Best, and was married to Cathy Cotton Best.

Joe Paul retired from AP Parts after 23 years; however, he continued working by going to detention school and working as a detention officer with the Johnston County Jail for 11 years.

An avid Carolina Tarheel fan, he was known throughout the community for coaching youth sports, as well as coaching the company softball team at AP Parts for numerous years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with Mr. Marty Gurganus officiating. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Eureka Christian Church Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends immediately following the funeral on Wednesday evening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cristy and Ben Brewer of Pikeville; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles "Brother" and Inger Best of Norway; an aunt, Mary Nelson of Goldsboro; his mother-in-law, Verda Cotton; his grandson, Zack Brewer; and his dog, Mally.
