Rebecca Koonts Rouse, 72, passed away Friday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Guilford County, she was the daughter of the late Archie Alva Koonts and Helen Snider Koonts and sister of the late Dr. Ronald Koonts. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and retired after 30 years from the Wayne County Department of Social Services as the supervisor of children’s services.

Rebecca was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church where she served as a Stephen Minister. She was a tireless, faithful servant of the Lord and of Saint Paul United Methodist Church, where she helped establish the Shepherd’s Fund. She also taught Sunday School, Bible Study and coordinated and led the Prayer Ministry of the church. She was a member of the Aldersgate Circle. She was a Red Cross volunteer for several years and enjoyed serving as a Neighborhood Watch Captain. She was an advocate and friend to many that had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

A service to celebrate Rebecca’s life will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phyllis Vail and the Rev. Tom Loftis officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. in the church parlor and the courtyard.

Rebecca is survived by her husband, David M. Rouse; a daughter, Paige R. Rouse of Goldsboro; a son, Keith D. Rouse of Goldsboro; two sisters, Carolyn Wagnon (her twin) and her husband, Leon of Florence, S.C. and Sandra Gramley and her husband, Bill of Lewisville, N.C.; and her sister-in-law, Pat Koonts of Waynesville, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Shepherd’s Fund at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530 or to the Greater Carolinas Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3101 Industrial Drive, Suite 210, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.
