Maj. Jay Russell Memmelaar Jr., 49, Dudley, passed away Thursday at Wayne UNC Health System.

Born in Bangor, Maine, he was the son of retired Lt. Col. Jay R. and Sharon L. Memmelaar, and was the husband of Irene R. Memmelaar.

Jay was a member of Freedom Baptist Church, and a major with the Goldsboro Police Dept.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith officiating. Committal services will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jay is survived by a son, MMN2 Christopher of Bangor, Wash.; a daughter, Maria of the home; two brothers, Matthew Memmelaar and Nathan Memmelaar; many nieces and nephews; as well as his law enforcement family.
