James Arthur Parker, 91, Calypso, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Monday evening, Jan. 30, 2017, surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m. at Calypso Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Gregory Day and the Rev. Paul Rose, with burial immediately following in Calypso Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday at the church fellowship hall prior to the service beginning at 1:30 p.m.

It was during World War II that Mr. Parker served in the United States Navy in the Pacific theatre.

He was employed with Calypso Plywood Co. for the better part of 48 years.

He had served his community as board member for the town of Calypso for several terms, and sat on both the school advisory boards for Calypso School and North Duplin School for a number of years.

He had been a central member of Calypso Fire Department for many years, and was influential in its new fire department building becoming a reality.

In past years, he was quite involved in the local Boy Scouts troop, and he served his Lord diligently at Calypso Baptist Church, being Sunday school director, deacon, building committee chairman and in various other capacities.

Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents, James Oscar Parker and Kitsey Lee Parker; a brother, Ralph Parker; and a sister, Margaret P. Bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Kennedy Parker; three children, Sharon P. Waicus and husband, Jim, of Angier, Jeff Parker of Calypso and Melanie P. Taylor and husband, Randy, of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Stephanie Waicus, Jaime Melito and husband, Mark, James Jeffrey Parker Jr., Ryan Taylor and Rylie Taylor; two great-grandsons, Axeley Melito and Nicholas Melito; and a brother, Brooks Parker of Mount Olive.
