SAMUEL POWELL JR.

Feb. 25, 1916-Nov. 4, 2016

Samuel Powell Jr., 100, New Hope Village Drive, departed this walk of life Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Mr. Powell was born in Nash County to the late Samuel Powell Sr. and Tempie Powell Feb. 25, 1916.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty L. Powell, and his caretaker, Taurus Hill.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.

A graveside service with full military honors will follow at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro at 2 p.m.

Mr. Powell was retired from the United States Navy.

After retiring from the Navy, Samuel settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., and went to work for the United States Postal Service.

This is where he met his longtime companion, Betty Adams, and in 2014, he made her his bride.

Samuel was a very private, self-made man, whose quest for learning never ended. In fact, he read "Huckleberry Finn," for the first time when he was in his late 80s.

He was a member of the greatest black generation -- men and women who were willing to risk their lives for this country even though they were not welcomed. These men and women came home from the war and helped to reinvigorate the Civil Rights movement.

When as sailor leave his ship for the last time, his shipmates wish him "fair winds and following seas." Take care and hang in there.

Professional services have been entrusted in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
