JAMES WAKEMAN HUBBELL

Jan. 17, 1945-Oct. 1, 2016

James Wakeman Hubbell, 71, Goldsboro, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at his home.

Jim was born in Washington, D.C., Jan. 17, 1945, to the late Edward Phillips Hubbell and Lois Barnes Hubbell.

After graduating from Bethany College in W.Va., he received his master's degree in hospital administration from the Medical College of Virginia.

Before moving to Goldsboro and serving as the former president and CEO of Wayne Memorial Hospital, Jim served as the president and CEO of Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston, W.Va.

Jim lived a life of dedication to his family, friends and community. He served his community as a past campaign chair for United Way of Wayne County.

Jim was most comfortable outdoors, on the water or in the woods.

Jim, his wife, Marlene, and family lived out his dreams of traveling, meeting new people and making new friends. People were drawn to Jim's bigger-than-life personality; he never met a stranger, and, if he did, that did not last long before you became a friend.

A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held privately for the family at a later date.

Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marlene Young Hubbell; son, Brent Lynes Hubbell and his wife, Sara, and grandchildren, Hannah and Sam of Cary; and daughter, Alicia H. Fehrenbach and husband, Greg, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and grandchildren, Avery and Michael.

He is also survived by his sisters, Judy Ruth Hubbell and husband, John Hedges, of San Francisco, Calif., and Wendy Hubbell Wilke and husband, Mike, of Connecticut, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Penland School of Crafts, P.O. Box 37, Penland, N.C., 28765.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.seymourfuneralhome.com.
