James E. Griffin, 81, resident of Mount Olive, died Sunday, Oct. 2, at Wayne Hospital.
Funeral is Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m., Tyndall Funeral Home, with visitation following.
Burial Thursday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m., Dixon Family Cemetery of Benson, N.C.
A native of Erwin, he had served in the North Carolina National Guard, was of the Baptist faith and had been employed as a funeral director with the former chain of Overby Funeral Homes, working mainly from the Clayton location.
Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon G. and Larry Whalen of Columbia, S.C., and Barbara Sue G. Benson and the Rev. Robert Benson of Shade Gap, Pa.; stepdaughter, Rhonda K. Benson and husband, Ed, of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers, David Griffin of Dunn and Jimmy Griffin of Burlington; sisters, Lena G. Betts of Newton Grove and Margaret G. Gainey of Dunn; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Rebecca Dixon Griffin; his second wife, Evelyn Jernigan Kelly Griffin, who died Sept. 19, 2016; an infant son, James Carl Griffin; stepdaughter, Sandra K. Whitman; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
