WILLIAM J. "BILL" IGOE

Aug. 30, 1928-Sept. 12, 2016

William Joseph "Bill" Igoe, longtime resident of Faison, passed away Sept. 12, 2016, after a period of declining health. He was 88 years old.

Bill was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Queens, N.Y., to William Henry and Dorothy Cropsey Igoe, who pre-deceased him.

He attended Grover Cleveland High School, where he was the starting shortstop for the New York City Championship Baseball Team for two years.

One of the highlights of his life was playing on Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds in those championship games.

He graduated in 1946, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

After a two-year stint in the Corps, he attended City College of New York until he was called up from the reserves to serve during the Korean War, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Upon discharge, he enrolled at Wake Forest College, graduating in 1953.

He was employed by General Electric until 1959 when he moved, with his family, to Faison, and began working for Charles F. Cates and Sons Pickle Co. He served as an office manager, corporate treasurer and corporate secretary until his retirement in 1993.

Bill was a classical music lover, an avid golfer, a proud former Marine and an enthusiastic sports fan, cheering faithfully for the San Francisco Giants, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the North Duplin Rebels.

He served his community proudly, being elected as mayor of Faison for 14 years and town commission for 26 years, as well as serving on the Goshen Medical Board and the Duplin County Board of Health.

He was an active member of Faison United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, finance chairperson, chairman of the administrative board and on other committees

He was a loyal supporter of North Duplin athletics, operating the football game clock for 40 years.

He loved life in Faison and life in general.

Mr. Igoe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Casey Igoe, and four children, Lois Pipkin and husband, Mark, of Hillsborough, Ellen Mangum and husband, John, of Sanford, Barbara Owen and husband, Wayne, of Blanch and Billy Igoe and wife, Sharon, of Winterville.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Erin Pipkin and husband, Jason Chang, of Oakland, Calif., Sam Pipkin, wife, Katie, and son, James, of Durham, Joseph Mangum and wife, Alexis, of Charlotte, Daniel Mangum, wife, Katie, and son, Woods, of Athens, Ga., Eric Mangum of Sanford, Casey Owen of Yanceyville and Scott and Stephen Igoe of Greenville.

The family will receive guests Thursday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 at Faison United Methodist Church and other times in the home at 106 Fletcher St., Faison.

A memorial service will be held at 2 Friday, Sept. 16, at Faison United Methodist Church.
