Died Sept. 12, 2016

William Maurice "Bill" Bernstein, 76, Stafford County, Va., passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at Mary Washington Hospital surrounded by family.

Bill was the son of Daisy and Jack Bernstein, and grew up in Goldsboro, N.C.

He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina undergrad program and law school.

He was an appellate attorney for more than 30 years with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C. He argued cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals, and participated in several cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

While in college, he enlisted in the United States Army, and served for two years.

Following retirement, he was a volunteer mediator for the court system.

He was a devoted family man, who adored his wife, Nancy, and two sons, Jonathan and Rick.

He embraced life with enthusiasm, and had a tremendous wit.

His many interests included the University of North Carolina basketball, golfing, hiking, exercising, biking, traveling, reading and spending time with his grandchildren.

He served on the board and several committees at Temple Beth Sholom, and coached Stafford Parks and Recreation basketball for 11 years. His team was always the Tarheels.

He loved the beach, beach music and shag dancing.

As a father, he set an outstanding example with his strong work ethic, enthusiasm, generosity, positive attitude and unconditional love. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nancy; son, Jonathan of Philadelphia, Pa.; son, Rick and wife, Lori, of Vienna, Va.; grandchildren, Eli and Susana Bernstein of Vienna, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dan Bernstein.

The Bernstein family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who took such good care of him. He was a fighter to the end.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at Beth Sholom Temple, 805 Lyons Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va., 22406. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
