SHIRLEY TURNER BARNES

Sept. 23, 1939-Aug. 12, 2016

Shirley Turner Barnes, 76, went to be with the Lord Aug. 12, 2016.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory, with pastor Rose Hicks and the Rev. Bill Creech officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Shirley was born in Wayne County Sept. 23, 1939, to the late Mattie and Claude Turner, the 10th child of 11.

Shirley was the light of her family and deeply loved. As a wife and mother, she was the very best, and they were blessed by her presence.

Some of Shirley's favorite things were spending time with her family and cooking. She also had a passion for books, and read everyday. She loved to travel to new places all over the world with her husband, Ray.

Shirley was a woman of great faith, and she loved her church family and her church, St. Joseph United Methodist Church in Pikeville.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ollie "Ray" Barnes; her daughter, Tammy Barnes Trail and husband, Mike; her son, Brad Barnes and wife, Angie; her grandchildren, Kristen Barnes and Matthew Trail; her brother, Leslie Turner and wife, Polly; her sisters, Maggie Martin, Dean Strickland and husband, John, Sally Arnold and husband, Bob and Fonnie Copple and husband, Elwood Mitchell; a special niece, Dale Robinson; along with many other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Lucy Kate Turner, Annie Reeverts, Ida Hinson and Hilda Ray Turner, and a brother, Earl Turner.

She certainly had a life well lived, and will be profoundly missed by everyone.
