John D. Barfield, LaGrange, departed this earth unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, to return to his Savior and receive his heavenly reward.

Mr. Barfield was born July 9, 1926, in Lenoir County to the late Jesse and Bettie Barfield.

He was a beloved and devoted husband, dad, granddad, great-granddad, great-great-granddad, brother, uncle and friend.

Mr. Barfield was a gentle, kind and loving man to all. He was quick to testify his faith and love for his Savior to anyone who would listen.

Mr. Barfield was a carpenter by trade for many years, and his amazing work spans from North Carolina to Florida. He was most proud of his work at the Raleigh Art Museum.

He was preceded in death by his wife and "Baby Doll" of 63 years, Dora Carter Barfield; five brothers, Bill, Henry, Oscar, Cecil and J.B. Barfield; three sisters, Annie Davis, Alma "Tiny" Benton and Alice Swaney; as well as a special son-in-law, Wilbur Heath; and his companion and beloved side kick, "Boo Boo."

Mr. Barfield is survived by a sister, Marie Hart and husband, Jack, of Goldsboro; four adoring children, Frances Cannon and husband, Elmer, John D. "Buddy" Barfield Jr. and wife, Sheila, and Doris "Dee" Barfield and wife, Rayne, all of LaGrange and Gerald Barfield and wife, Pam, of Atlantic Beach; six grandchildren, Benita Rodriguez, Karen Pate and husband, Tommy, Beth Hill, Dawn Gale and husband, Brooks, name sake John Eric Barfield and wife, Patricia, and Aron Daniels and wife, Amy; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loving neighbors.

His acts of kindness, his quick wit, his love for his family and most of all, his dedication to Jesus Christ, will be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of all who loved this unique man of God.

A celebration of the life of John D. Barfield will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at 2 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
