Leslie Brown "Brownie" Southerland Jr., 76, LaGrange, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016.

Brownie was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Duplin County to the late Leslie Brown Southerland and Hazel Davis Southerland.

Brownie worked as a park ranger at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

In 1984, Brownie and Suzanne opened Beautancus Christmas Tree Farm.

Brownie had a deep passion for the outdoors. He was most happy when out fishing or bird hunting.

Brownie enjoyed being out on the farm, gardening and tinkering with his antique tractors.

He loved having his canine companion and best friend, Maggie, by his side .

Brownie loved spinning a good story to all he came in contact with.

A memorial service to celebrate Brownie's life will be held Thursday, July 7, 2016, at 6 p.m. at Calypso Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Nick Nielson officiating.

Brownie is survived by his wife of 31 years, Suzanne Whyte Southerland; two daughters, Sharon Price and husband, Scott, of Seven Springs and Lori Martin and husband, Tony, of Beautancus; two brothers, Leonard "Bud" Southerland and Kent Southerland and wife, Sarah, of Beautancus; three grandchildren, Casey Kelly and husband, Anthony, Gary Mark Tillman and wife, Jessica, and Davis Price; two great-grandchildren, Rhylea Kelly and Clay Tillman; along with Brownie's honorary children, Julie Smith, Suzanne Daniels, Wayne Jackson, Mike Cavin and Kody Kennedy.

In addition to his parents, Brownie was preceded in death by a sister, Becky Krieger.

Brownie's family will receive friends Thursday following the memorial service and at other times, will be at the home.
