Theressa Smith Waters was born May 5, 1938, in Wayne County, N.C.

She was the fifth child of eight born to the late Matt Lee and Beulah Thompson Smith.

Surrounded by her family, she peacefully transitioned Monday, June 27, 2016, at 12:45 a.m. at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C.

She grew up in Goldsboro, N.C., and graduated from Central High School ,where she also worked in the office.

She attended Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, and later joined under the leadership of the Rev. W.C. Cotton.

In 1959, she married Earnest Waters, and together they had four children, Wanda, who preceded her in death, Earnest Jr., Sheryl and Andre´.

Theressa was also preceded in death by four sisters, Rhetta Lee Baker, Vernell Parks, Ethel Smith and Blanche Artis, and two brothers, Elmer Smith and Vincent Devon Smith Sr.

To continue her legacy of teaching and sharing, she leaves her son, Earnest Waters Jr. of Durham, N.C.; devoted daughter, Sheryl Waters and friend, Greg Hartsfield, of Raleigh, N.C.; devoted son, Andre´ Waters of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tiandre, James and M’Khynzee; one sister, Elna Waters of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Flora Chambers and Goldie Harris-Smith both of Goldsboro, N.C.; one uncle, Alfonzo Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one aunt, Mattie Cadlett of Augusta, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Waters will be held Saturday, July 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 4460 U.S. 13 North, Goldsboro. Interment will follow at Old Mill Cemetery, 3700 Central Heights Road.

A public viewing will be held Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and the family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

The family will assemble at 420 Waters Circle at 10:15 a.m. Saturday in preparation for the processional.

Hamilton Funeral Chapel is serving the family.
