HALLETT W. MAYO

Hallett W. Mayo, 95, died May 13, 2016.

He was born in the community of Hobucken, N.C., on Goose Creek Island in Pamlico County, May 9, 1921.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Alfred Mayo Sr. and Olivia Gaskins Mayo; his loving wife, Glenda I. Mayo; and a granddaughter, Lanell Hancock.

His family moved to Alliance, N.C., in 1928, where he completed his high school education. He received his formal education at Barton College (Atlantic Christian College) and North Carolina State University.

His first job was at Standard Oil Co. in Washington, D.C., where he was working at the outbreak of World War II.

He was drafted into the United States Army, and served with the First Infantry Division, Third Army. He arrived in France, and fought through Normandy, was injured and taken prisoner near Metz, France.

While a prisoner of the Germans, he was assigned to Stalag 12-A in Linburg, Germany, and Stalag 2-B in Hammerstein, Poland.

Mayo was liberated May 1, 1945, by the Russian Army.

After his return to the United States, he married Glenda Ireland. Upon discharge from the Army, he and Glenda returned to Alliance.

In 1946, he was elected clerk of Superior Court. He held that office until 1960, when he was hired by BB and T, and assigned to the Goldsboro office. He served as trust officer for two years, then city executive of the Goldsboro office.

Later he took a regional position.

He retired July 1986.

He is survived by his daughters, Oliva M. Hancock (Robert) of Hubert, N.C., and Annette M. Shaw (Conal) of Roanoke, Va., and his sisters-in-law, Elsie Mayo of New Bern, Gladys Lee (Jack) of Arapahoe, Oma Riggs of Bahama and Daisye Ireland of LaBelle, Fla.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Melissa H. Pace (Geno), Catherine S. Marlow (Mac) and Jonathan Shaw (Stacie).

He also is survived by five great-grandchildren, Tanner, Taylor, Nathaniel, Olivia and Caroline, plus a number of nieces and nephews and extended family.

He was active in Wayne County, served six years as chairman of Wayne County Development Commission, recruited industries to Wayne County, as well as being active in St. Luke United Methodist Church, Methodist Retirement Homes, Wayne Masonic Lodge, Wayne Shrine Club, Elks Lodge, Walnut Creek Country Club and more recently, Golden K, where he was associated with old and new friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of North Carolina Veterans Home for making his past year and half fulfilling.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. May 16, 2016, at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Rufus Butner and the Rev. Adam Seate Jr. at St. Luke United Methodist Church at 1608 E. Pine St., Goldsboro, N.C., May 16, 2016, at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow at the church. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park at 3:30 p.m.
