Retired Chief Master Sgt. Charles Edward Smith, 74, passed away Thursday morning, April 14, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a long illness.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Goldsboro. Interment with full military honors will follow at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 164 Longs Plant Farm Road.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, April 20, 2016, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mr. Smith was born in Virginia Dec. 4, 1941, to the late Armistead and Mable Weakley Smith.

He was retired from the United States Air Force, and was a member of St. Michael and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Mr. Smith was an outdoorsman and an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda Bacani-Smith; one daughter, Valencia Renee Carter and husband, Jason, of Goldsboro and her mother, LaVera Smith of Goldsboro; four stepchildren; two sisters, Virgie Scott of Virginia and Frances Groves and husband, John, of Virginia; one grandchild, Dustin Tyler Carter; 10 stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and several more extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Ernest Smith, and a sister, Rose Wichterman.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
