John Wesley Sargent, 91, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

John was born in Shelburn, Ind., Sept. 12, 1924, to the late John Aitken Sargent and Florence Morris Sargent. He was married for 51 years to the late Marie Celeste Sargent.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired from the Chevrolet Division of General Motors with more than 30 years of service.

John served as past master of Fellowship Lodge No. 571 A.F. and A.M. in Grand Blanc, Mich.

After moving to Goldsboro, John became a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church, and served on the senior board at the Goldsboro Family Y.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 4, 2016, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, followed by a service celebrating John's life at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Madison Hankal officiating. Military honors will conclude the services in the sanctuary.

John is survived by his daughter, LaDonna Marie Clary and husband, Dale; son, John W. Sargent Jr. and wife, Peggy; daughter-in-law, Julie Sargent; brother, Dr. Charles W. Sargent and wife, Nannette, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Morgan, Amie (Randy) Willis, Trisha Hyatt, Kelly (Garrett) Jackson, Eric Sargent, Ian Sargent, Heather (Ken) Fritz, Rachelle (Bob) Boylan, Raina Lorenz and Ronald Groves; and great-grandchildren, Ellen Marie, Lee, Michael, Brittney, Samuel, Grace Elizabeth, Jacqueline, Kelly, Parker, Grace Kelly, Elleana, Joel, Natalie, Danielle, Allyson and Hailey.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Aitken Sargent, and sisters, Eleanor Grubbs, Freda Boyd and Beulah Mahan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Pine Forest United Methodist Church, 867 S. N.C. 581, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
