CHRISTINE JERNIGAN WILLIAMS

Jan. 24, 1952-Feb. 22, 2016

Mrs. Christine Jernigan Williams, 64, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Dove House in Westminster.

She was the wife of David C. Williams, her husband of 44 years.

Born Jan. 24, 1952, in Suffolk, Va., she was the daughter of George Jernigan of Silver Spring and the late and Mary Alice Jernigan, who died in 2008.

Raised in Suffolk, Va., Christine loved to sing in church, and was much in demand as a soloist.

She went on to study vocal music at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

Valentine’s Day weekend of 1971, Christine’s suite mate set Christine up on a blind date with her boyfriend’s brother, David. It was love at first sight. Christine and David were married after a short courtship Dec. 18, 1971.

They made their home in Wayne County, N.C., where David worked as a school counselor.

Sons, Randy and Matthew, were born in North Carolina.

In 1982, the family relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where David completed a Ph.D. in guidance and counseling at Catholic University of America.

Son, Timothy, was born in Maryland, and the family was active at Mount Airy Full Gospel Church and Church of the Redeemer.

In 1990, the family moved into its home in Mount Airy, where all three boys grew to adulthood, and Christine had a yard where she could tend to her flowers. She homeschooled her children, and worked in the front offices of several Christian counseling agencies.

She loved indulging her creative side, and decorated her home with many of her projects. Last winter, she displayed her extensive Snow Village at the Mount Airy Library for her neighbors to enjoy.

She and David vacationed many summers at Bethany Beach, welcoming family and friends as their guests. They were able to go one last time in 2015, before Christine’s health began to decline. Just after they returned, granddaughter, Alice, was born, and they made the trip to Pennsylvania to meet her.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and father, are three sons, Randy Williams and wife, Kathy, of Mount Airy, Matt Williams and wife, Kim, of Germantown and Tim Williams and wife, Maggie, of Manhattan, Kan.; four grandchildren, Evelyn and Alice, daughters of son, Tim, and Caroline and Daniel, stepdaughter and stepson of Randy; two younger sisters, Charlotte Goebel and husband, Wayne, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Leannah Gignac and husband, Mark, of Danville, Va.; stepmother, Winnie Jernigan of Silver Spring; as well as countless nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Damascus Road Community Church, 12826 Old National Pike, Mount Airy, where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.

Arrangements are by Stauffer Funeral Home of Mount Airy.
