JOSEPH L. "JAY" WHITFIELD

Joseph Leonard "Jay" Whitfield Jr., 80, resident of the Rones Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, at home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kelvin Coates officiating. Interment followed in Maplewood Cemetery. Full military honors were rendered.

Visitation was held during the hour before the services.

Mr. Whitfield, retired from the United States Army with 27 years of service, had long attended Rones Chapel United Methodist Church, and had served on various committees.

In recent years, he had worshipped at Long Ridge Free Will Baptist Church.

After his military retirement, he was employed with Lowe's in Goldsboro, and he was a member of Rones Chapel Community Watch, and was a poll worker in his voting precinct.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Waters Whitfield; their children, Toni Mills Edwards of Grimesland, Jon Whitfield and wife, Angie, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Kim Whitfield of Greenville; five grandchildren, Garland Edwards Jr., Cody Whitfield, Trey Whitfield, Kayley Whitfield and Ashlyn Whitfield; two great-grandchildren, Kyndall Edwards and Cheyanne Edwards; a sister, Georgia W. Bowers of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ava Gray W. and Bud Price of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Garland Edwards; his parents, Joseph Leonard Whitfield and Mary Ellen Garner Whitfield; a brother, Randall Whitfield; and a sister, Audrey W. Price.
