LEON CHARLES MITCHELL

Leon Charles Mitchell, 93, of Goldsboro, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015. He was born on May 3, 1922 in Palmyra, New Jersey, one of five children.

Mitch loved playing sports as a child and played football, basketball and baseball in high school. He lettered in all three sports and was All State for the state of New Jersey. Mitch received a football scholarship to the University of North Carolina and remained a true Tarheel for the rest of his life. After a football injury at UNC, he became a sports writer for The Daily Tarheel. He left UNC to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and returned to graduate in 1948. Mitch had a long and successful career in designing and equipping restaurants in North Carolina and Virginia.

He loved the North Carolina Tarheels and spent as many Saturdays as possible attending football games, cheering them on to victory. When he was not able to attend, his transistor radio was always by his side. He also loved spending time on the Bogue Sound with his family.

Mitch was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie James Mitchell, brother, Alfred Mitchell, brother, Earnest Mitchell, sister, Mildred Dockwell and daughter, Susan Goodwin. He is survived by daughters, Carole Trout and her husband, Frederick, Harriette Sharpe and her husband, Ken, Emily Nobles and her husband, John, Anne Warner and her husband, Dale, Katherine Hutcheson and her husband, Jim and Mary Margaret Brantley and her husband, Julian. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at Madison Avenue Baptist Church where he was a charter member.
