JAMES C. CHADWICK

Died July 22, 2015

God reclaimed James C. Chadwick July 22, 2015, after 90 years of life filled with love, humor and achievement.

James Chadwick was born to Walter and Corean Jones Chadwick in Onslow County, and was raised in Kinston.

A true sports fanatic, he played many sports at Adkin High School, achieving success in football, basketball and baseball.

Mr. Chadwick also played semi-professional baseball for the Kinston Grays, and he won the state championship in recreational league table tennis.

Mr. Chadwick served his country in the Navy during World War II.

He attended St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, where he earned a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and biology, and was president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

He also excelled as a college athlete in football, basketball, baseball and boxing. He was inducted into the honor society, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1953.

Mr. Chadwick then pursued his master's degree in health, physical education and biology from North Carolina Central University in Durham.

Mr. Chadwick embarked upon his professional career as a teacher and coach at Pikeville Training School. He subsequently taught and coached at Norwayne High School in Fremont.

In 1959, he came to Frink High School, where he taught and coached baseball and basketball.

At Frink, Chadwick's Frink Wildcats single-handedly dominated the district championships for District 5, repeatedly winning the district title.

He led his teams to the North Carolina state semifinals in 1959 and 1960. In 1961, Chadwick led the Frink Wildcats to a 31-1 season and to the state championship. It was the first state championship Frink had ever won and the first state championship won by a school in eastern North Carolina at the time. Mr. Chadwick amassed 320 total wins at Frink and 82 wins at Pikeville and Norwayne.

Mr. Chadwick was honored by the North Carolina Coaches Association with a 20-year service award.

In 2009, he was inducted into the North Lenoir Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements.

In 2010, the gymnasium at Frink was dedicated to him and renamed the Coach J.C. Chadwick Court to honor his many significant accomplishments as a winning coach for 23 years.

Mr. Chadwick's students and athletes have honored him personally in many ways. They have achieved a diverse array of impressive successes -- some becoming winning coaches, professional athletes, successful businessmen, government officials, accomplished attorneys and college professors, to name a few. They often attribute their successes to Mr. Chadwick's leadership, crediting him for motivating them and setting high expectations of them.

Most of all, Mr. Chadwick enjoyed his great friends and a loving family, all of whom loved him tremendously.

He was the loving husband of Diane Chadwick, the father of Angela and Jacqueline Chadwick and the father-in-law of Ken Grimes.

Mills Funeral Home will handle final arrangements.

The celebration of life service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2015, 1 p.m. at St. Augustus AME Zion Church in Kinston, where Mr. Chadwick was a member for most of his life.

A viewing will begin at noon.

His earthly frame will be laid to rest at Pinelawn Memorial.
