JOYCE MURPHY MINCHEW

Joyce Murphy Minchew, 73, Wallace, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at home.

Joyce was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Rose Hill to the late Norman Holmes Murphy and Lois King Murphy.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Myra Ellen Murphy.

Joyce was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education. She later attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to complete her major in English.

Joyce was a teacher for 24 years. She taught English at Union High School for seven years, and completed her teaching career at Harrells Christian Academy, where she taught for 17 years.

She was a member of Charity United Methodist Church for 60 years, where she was pianist for more than 25 years and taught Sunday school class to all ages.

After marrying Delmar Minchew in 2002, she became a member of Wallace United Methodist Church.

Joyce had an innate love for the beauty of nature, which led to her passion for gardening. She also loved to travel, and more than anything, she loved her family second only to the Lord.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 13 years this June, Delmar Minchew.

She is also survived by one daughter, Angela Norman Brown and husband, Robby Brown; three grandchildren, Zelle, Brody and Leah; two stepchildren, Todd Minchew and children, Kendrick, Will and Jane Caroline, and Gina Strickland and husband, Clay, and children, Catherine and Fredrick.

Also surviving are Joyce's two brothers, Wendell Holmes Murphy and wife, Linda, of Rose Hill and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Harry Daniel "Pete" Murphy and wife, Lynn, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and 21 nieces and nephews.

Joyce wanted a special thank you expressed to her healthcare givers from Interim Health, Well Care Home Care and Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She especially wanted to thank Tammy Boone for her loving care and friendship.

Also, an overwhelming expression of gratitude from Joyce and the family for the cards, visits, food and endless support throughout this journey.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Wallace United Methodist Church, 303 S. College St., Wallace, at 2 p.m. Entombment will immediately follow at Devotional Gardens, 1260 N.C. 24 and N.C. 50,
Warsaw.

The family will be receiving friends at the Minchew home, 152 River Ridge Drive, Wallace.

Her body will lie in state for viewing at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home, 612 S. Norwood St., Wallace.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the ALS Association Research Program, 1275 K St. NW, Suite 250, Washington, D.C., 20005.
