Barbara Dowell Kittrell, 77, passed away Tuesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

She was born in Pennington Gap, Va. to the late Lundy and Eula Dowell, and was married to USAF Msgt. Frank Kittrell (Ret.).

Barbara enjoyed time raising flowers and gardening.

As her health declined, she returned to her love of quilting.

Many hours were spent hand-stitching quilts for her family and loved ones.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with pastor Jonathan Smith officiating.

Committal services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kittrell is survived by a son, Tony Ely of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Donna Ely Rees and husband, Al, and Beverly Ely Smith and husband, Bobby, all of Goldsboro; the joy of her life, four grandchildren, Evangeline Combs of Snow Hill, Amber Lund and husband, Joey, and Brodie Smith, all of Goldsboro, Haley Ely of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Lund and Caroline Ely; two step-children, Jean Whitaker and David Kittrell and wife, Angie; four step-grandchildren, Michael Kittrell Tyler and wife, Lauren, Alyssia Kittrell, Jennifer Johnson and Joseph Whitaker; two step-great-grandchildren, Bailey Kittrell and Hailey Jones; two sisters, Evelyn Harless of Pennington Gap, Va. and Sandra Cheek of Clemmons, N.C.; a brother, Junior Dowell of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and numerous nieces and nephews from the Virginia mountains to the coasts of the Carolinas.

She is now in heaven with her first born, Michael Ely, along with her sisters, Della Jones, Etta Lee Cox and Shelby Cain.

The family would like to send a heartfelt thanks to all for their prayers and kindness, a special thanks to Dr. Cuddapah and his staff at Goldsboro Medical Center, Community Care Hospice, Respricare and their Freedom Baptist Church family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wayne Uplift, c/o of Cassy Wood, 108 Twin Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534 for the annual Toy Run to benefit the children of Wayne County this Christmas.
