JR Lancaster, 88, Pikeville, passed away Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at Pikeville Cemetery.

Born in Wayne County Feb. 20, 1927, the third son of the late Bryant and Ellen Lancaster, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lancaster; a son, Michael Emmett Lancaster; three brothers, Tommy "Big Daddy" Lancaster, Jack Lancaster and Henry Brown; a sister, Mary Ellen Vail; and son-in-law, Glenn Edge.

Mr. Lancaster was an active member of his community.

He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, and was a member of Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

He was a charter member of Patetown Fire Department and a lifetime member of the Wayne County Wildlife Club.

He was also a member of Harmony Lodge No. 340 in Pikeville. Mr. Lancaster was presented the Diamond Jubilee Certificate and pin in recognition of his 60 years as a Master Mason by The Grand Lodge of AF and AM of North Carolina.

A lifetime farmer on his family farm, Mr. Lancaster subsequently retired after 20 years as a USDA tobacco grader.

He is survived by a son, Steve Lancaster and wife, Gail; a daughter, Theda Lancaster Edge; daughter-in-law, Pam Lancaster; grandchildren, Stephanie Lancaster Jones and husband, Curtis, Jay Lancaster and fiancée, Waheeda Karim, Marcus Bailey, Gabriel Lancaster and wife, Christina, Stacie Edge Moore and husband, Rickie, Will Lancaster and Leah Lancaster; and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
