The family will receive friends Monday, April 6, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Rhonda and Charlie Gaylor, 310 W. Walnut St., Goldsboro.

John proudly served his country as a heavy machine gunner in the United States 7th Army, Third Division, 15th Infantry during World War II. While serving overseas, he was in combat in France, Germany and Austria. He was honorably discharged Dec. 14, 1945, from injuries he sustained in active duty. John was awarded for his service to his country the Distinguished Unit Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Gaylor IV and wife, Sarah, of Goldsboro; brother, Ertel McDonald and wife, Carolyn, of Summerville, S.C.; sisters, Lois Boyd of St. Paul's and Barbara Ingram of Lumberton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Martin McDonald.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to the wonderful staff on the third floor at Wayne Memorial Hospital for the love and care it provided for John. Simple words cannot express our gratitude.

Also, a thank you to the compassionate caregivers at the Sterling House, who cared for John over these past years.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or to the charity of one's choice.
