FAISON -- Luther Eddice Taylor, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully on Feb. 6, 2015 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, surrounded by his family. He was born on Sept. 3, 1929, in Faison.

A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Faison Cemetery. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.

Luther graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. He taught high school physics for 10 years before serving 25 years as postmaster in Faison.

Luther was a scientist, naturalist, inventor and hobbyist. He loved living on Taylor's Pond, where he raised swans and tended to wildlife. He had a passion for his hobbies, which included photography, furniture-building, clock-making, boating and fishing, motorcycling and deep-sea fishing. But he was happiest in the air, flying hot air balloons and ultra-light airplanes.

Luther is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Harriett Tucker Taylor, his parents, Luther Eddice and Lucille Winders Taylor, and his brothers, Frank Donnell Taylor and Kenneth Ray Taylor.

He is survived by his son, Luther Eddice Taylor III (Trey) and his wife, Rhonda; and daughter, Harriett Tucker Taylor (Tuck), and her husband, George Loveland. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cameron and Caroline Taylor, Matthew, Joseph, Daniel and Andrew Bounds, Beth and Caroline Loveland, his sister, Betty Lou Williams, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and memorials be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
