Durwood Gene Kennedy, 76, well-known Mount Olive businessman, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 8, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church to be officiated by his pastor, the Rev. Steven Wicks, and followed by burial in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.
Visitation will be at the Tyndall Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.
At other times, the family will be at the residence.
He was a member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church where he had been a former elder.
He had owned and operated Kennedy Realty in Mount Olive since its founding in the late 1960s.
Prior to that, he had been employed with longtime friend Charles Thompson in the insurance business.
In past years, he had been quite active in community and political arenas.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet Stanley Kennedy of the home; a son, Eric Kennedy of Mount Olive; daughter and son-in-law, Denise Kennedy Newhard and Gary Newhard, of Smithfield; his mother, Christine Myers Kennedy of Mount Olive; a brother and sister-in-law, Lynwood and Ann Kennedy, of Mount Olive; two nephews, Jeff Kennedy and wife, Kim, and their daughters, Mollianne and Claire, all of Grantham; and Michael Kennedy and Jennifer, of Benson, and his daughter, Lindsey of Cary.
He was preceded in death by his father, Estus E. Kennedy.
