DAVID S. MEDLIN

David Shuler Medlin, 79, Princeton, passed away Sunday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

David was born in Durham County Nov. 3, 1934, to the late Percy and Lillie Harvel Medlin.

He joined the United States Navy in 1956, and proudly served on the USS Roanoke (CL145) in 1957.

In September 1957, David became a shellback by crossing the equator.

He also served in 1958 on the USS Ernest G. Small (DDR838) and the USS Haven (AH12).

He retired from the North Carolina Army National Guard, where he received two Army Achievement Awards, and his unit won the Eisenhower Trophy in 1978.

David was also retired from the United States Postal Service, having served as a mail carrier in Durham.

Following his retirement, David enjoyed the opportunity to work with Sam's Club and JCPenney, but most important to him was the time he spent with his family.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by service remembering David at 2 p.m. in the chapel, with pastor Jennifer Medlin officiating. Military honors will follow the service on the front lawn.

At other times, the family will receive friends at 130 S. Marion Drive, Goldsboro.

David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Reagan Medlin; children, Linda Johnson and husband, John, of Goldsboro, William Medlin and wife, Jane, of Durham, Donald Medlin and wife, Sherry, of Goldsboro, Richard Medlin and wife, Jennifer, of Goldsboro and Rose Wolfe and husband, Donald, of Pikeville; 32 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.
