Robert Sasser Edgerton, 77, Goldsboro, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Robert was born in Wayne County Dec. 6, 1936, to the late Ira Franklin and Virginia Sasser Edgerton.

For 40 years, he proudly served his community on Elroy Volunteer Fire Department. Robert served as fire chief for Elroy for more than 25 years.

Robert was a member of Nahunta Friends Meeting, and had more recently been attending New Hope Friends Meeting.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

He was a hardworking man, which was the theme of his life; he lived to work. He was the kind of man who was loyal to his family, who took great pride in caring and providing for them.

He was a retired manager of Dillion Supply Co.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14, 2014, at 6 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with Bill Garner officiating. Interment will take place Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Robert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Annie Perry Edgerton; son, Robert Keith Edgerton and wife, Cyndi, of Pikeville; daughters, Sherry Bass and husband, Michael, of Goldsboro and Jenny Raye of Goldsboro; brothers, James "J.T." Edgerton and wife, Elaine, of Goldsboro and Ben Edgerton and wife, Kathy, of Nahunta; sisters, Belle Aycock of Pikeville and Janice Whitley of Kenly; grandchildren, Jordan Edgerton and wife, Ashely, Stacy Grady, Brittani Purdie and husband, Taylor, Brandon Edgerton and wife, Melanie, Brooke Edgerton, Tyler Raye, Taylor Raye and Mason Bass; great-grandchildren, Kohlton Grubb, Hayden Purdie, Layla Edgerton, Tyson Petteway and Layton Edgerton; special family friend, Bobbie Coley; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Franklin Edgerton, and sisters, Alice Sasser, and Alma Lewis.

Robert's family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Dove, Dr. Mayo and nurse Brittany Brown for the love and compassion that was shown to him and the family during his time of sickness.

The family will receive friends following the service Monday evening at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at his home.
