JOHN ALLEN BENNETT

Aug. 4, 1923-June 11, 2014

John Allen Bennett, 90, of the Grantham community died Thursday, June 11, 2014, at Willow Creek Nursing Home.

He was born in Johnston County on Aug. 4, 1923, to the late Allen (Pete) Bennett and Lucille Barefoot Bennett. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Alice Hood Bennett. John Allen was a member of Selah Christian Church.

He was a dairy and tobacco farmer for many years in the Grantham community. John Allen was one of the original founders of the local fire department in Grantham. He served on the advisory board for Grantham School and was a member of the Grantham Grange and the Woodmen of the World. He also served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

In addition to his wife, John Allen is survived by four sons, David Allen Bennett (Sue), Clark Hood Bennett (Barbara) and Reed Owen Bennett, all of Goldsboro, and Jack Rose Bennett (Nanette) of Newport, N.C. He was preceded in death by a son, John Wayne Bennett; his brother, David Allen Bennett (Doc) and a sister, Louise Westbrook. He was blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10-11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service celebrating John Allen's life at 11 a.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. A private interment for the family will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
