LAURA S. JAMES

June 3, 1928-June 5, 2014

Laura Saunders James passed away June 5, 2014.

She was born June 3, 1928, to Edna Faircloth Saunders and Leander T. Saunders, and was raised in Ivor, Va.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va.

In June of 1949, she married Joseph H James Jr. of Surry, Va.

She taught first and second grades in Albemarle County, Va., from 1949 to 1952.

Mrs. James was active in her church and community, serving as a Girl Scout troop leader in Goldsboro, N.C., and as a member of local women's clubs, garden clubs and bridge clubs in Virginia and North Carolina, where she lived.

She was an accomplished cook, and loved to entertain, the consummate hostess and friend.

She was only recently predeceased by her husband of 64 years.

She is survived by her son, J. Hayden James III of Raleigh; her daughter, Lavinia James Vaughn of Tampa, Fla.; her daughter-in-law, Catherine McCracken James; and her grandchildren, William Joseph James, Sarah Elizabeth James, Grace Renaud Vaughn and Madeleine Camille Vaughn.

Services will be scheduled in July.
