Allan Wade Umstead, 78, Goldsboro, passed away June 9, 2014, at Countryside Village, Pikeville, N.C.

Allan was the son of the late Mary Wilkerson Umstead and Percy Wade Umstead of Durham, N.C.

He was the owner and president of Direct Carpet and Premiere Carpets of Goldsboro since 1972.

Alan also worked at Meade Container in Durham, N.C., and sold Yellow Pages for Bell South Telephone Co.

Next to his family, Allan's work and business were most important to him. He believed in being honest and fair to his employees and customers.

Allan was born into the Presbyterian faith, but became a Methodist after marriage. The family attended St. Luke United Methodist Church until his father-in-law asked him to transfer to St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Allan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Becky Houser Umstead; son, Charles Allan Umstead and wife, Cindy, of Goldsboro; daughter, LeAnn Umstead Crocker and husband, John, of Dudley; grandchildren, Charlie Umstead, Sam Crocker and Holly Crocker; and stepgrandchildren, Ashleigh Deal and Emily Deal.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phyllis Vail, the Rev. James Harry and the Rev. John White officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Dale Cemetery.
