Billy Thomas Cooke, 84, formerly of 1904 Palm St., Goldsboro, died April 6, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a long fight with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Newcomb Cooke; his parents, Luther and Roxie Cooke; his brothers, Albert Roland Cooke and William Carl Cooke; and three sisters, Dolly Branton Cooke, Sadie Cooke Smith and Alma Susan Cooke.

The funeral service will be conducted at Casey Funeral Home chapel at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, with the Dr. Rev. Fred Clark and pastor Daniel Arant officiating. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.

During his life, Billy served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War while stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

He worked for General Electric for 40 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1990.

He also worked for PerFlo tours part-time after his retirement.

He was a member of First Christian Church since 1956. While a member at First Christian, he served as youth group leader, usher, deacon and elder. He also played in the Church Bowling League.

Throughout his life, he wore a smile on his face, and was a friend to anyone he would meet.

Mr. Cooke is survived by his daughter, Susan Cooke Wise Garris and son-in-law, Kenneth Garris of Kenly; his daughter, Terri Cooke Crawford and son-in-law, Gary Crawford of East Amherst, N.Y.; a brother, Patrick Cooke of Chapel Hill; and his grandchildren, Sarah Wise of Garner, Mark Wise of Wilson and Lesley Crawford and Andrew Crawford of East Amherst, N.Y.

The family will receive friends at Casey Funeral Home one hour prior to and following the funeral service. At other times, the family will receive friends at Garris home in Kenly.
