Eleanor McCullen Hughes Leonard, 74, passed away Saturday, March 15, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was surrounded by her family.

Eleanor was born in Sampson County, N.C., on May 3, 1939, to the late Joseph Herman and Naomi Thigpen McCullen.

She worked for Wake County Schools for more than 20 years and currently worked part time at French's Cleaners in Goldsboro.

She was a devoted member of Park East Church of God, where she played the piano, sang in the choir and served as director of Young-at-Heart, a senior adult group. She also was a volunteer in the community and enjoyed spending time in her vegetable and flower gardens and working outside in her yard.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at Park East Church of God, with the Rev. J. Wesley Jarman, the Rev. Greg Nethercutt and the Rev. Karl Bartlett officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive, N.C.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Kristi Hughes Rosenberg (Mike) of Pennington, N.J.; son, Kevin Hughes, of Raleigh; sister, Lillian Jarman (J. Wesley) of Goldsboro; stepbrothers Marvin Braddy (Dina), Alvin Braddy (JoAnne) and Melvin Braddy. She is also survived by two beloved grandchildren, Madison and Cameron Rosenberg, who lovingly called her "Nonnie."

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Melissa Donne Hughes, and her sister, Janet McCullen Harris.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Park East Church of God, 3913 McLain St., Goldsboro, NC, 27534 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.com) in honor of her grandson, Cameron.

The family will receive friends prior to funeral services on Monday, March 17, from 10 to 11 a.m.
