BEATRICE LEWIS BONE JOHNSON

Sept. 7, 1923-Feb. 7, 2014

Lillie Beatrice Lewis Bone Johnson died Friday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Bea was the daughter of the late Chester Layman and Lillie Annie Dickens Lewis.

She grew up in Hobgood, N.C., graduated from Louisburg College and worked briefly in Rocky Mount.

Jan. 11, 1948, she married William Clarence Bone of Sandy Cross, and they moved to Goldsboro to make their home.

Bea and Clarence raised four children, and worked together in agricultural and commercial businesses for almost 25 years before Clarence's death in 1972.

After this, Bea continued to work for Goldsboro City Schools until her retirement.

Dec. 28, 1979, she married George A. Johnson. They spent 25 happy years together, enjoying church activities, friends, traveling and spending time with family.

She was devoted to her family, and loved each of them immensely.

Bea was very involved in and loved her churches, Saint Luke Methodist and First Baptist Church of Goldsboro. She was a devoted Christian woman, which was very evident throughout her life.

She also loved her home at Topsail Beach. One of her family's most cherished memories is of celebrating her 90th birthday in the home by the sound on a gorgeous day this past September.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Bea was preceded in death by her son, David Layman Bone; her brother, William L. "Bill" Lewis; and sister, Imogene L. Aiken.

She is survived by her brother, Stanley A. Lewis of Roanoke Rapids; sisters-in-law, Lucille Bone of Sandy Cross and Marilyn Rhodes of Goldsboro; her children, Julian (Marie) Bone of Topsail Beach, Nancy (Calvin) Pippin of Zebulon, Charlie (Ann) Bone of Chiang Mai, Thailand; and stepchildren, Debbie (Brice) Poland of Elm City and Al (Lynne) Johnson of Pikeville.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Jason and Adam Pippin, Aaron Bone, Ellen (Bob) Cali, Ruth and Abigail Bone; stepgrandchildren, Stuart (Ellen) Poland, Stephen (Sarah) Poland, Candi Johnson, Charity (Lloyd) Price and Bobbie Sue (Michael) Wilcox; along with her stepgreat-grandchildren, Christy and Samantha Price and Kellen and Madison Wilcox.

She also leaves behind her dear friend, Ann Futrelle of Goldsboro, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Bea's family would like to thank her caregivers and doctors for the love and care given to her.

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Goldsboro or Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel Building Fund at Topsail Beach.

A visitation will be held at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
