L. HOWARD HAM
Jan. 30, 1933-Jan. 9, 2014
LAGRANGE -- The family of Leslie Howard Ham celebrated his homegoing Jan. 9, 2014.
Howard was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Snow Hill, N.C., where he lived his earthly life. He was the son of Thedie and Hannah Ham, and the younger brother of siblings Noah, Harper, Winnie and Ellen.
He was happily married to the love of his life, Janice Carraway Ham, for 55 years.
They were blessed with two children, Terri and Jay, and their children's spouses, Jay Kornegay and Ann Hamm, whom they loved like their own.
Some years later, God blessed this loving couple with four grandchildren, Brittany and husband, Kevin Acree, Kyle Ham and wife, Caitlin, Jay Kornegay and Tyler Kornegay.
In 2013, they welcomed their first "great-grand," Harper Anne Acree.
Howard and Janice enjoyed a good life on the farm. He instilled in his family the desire to work hard, play hard and always care for others.
He truly had a servant's heart, sharing gifts often anonymously with those in need following the teachings of Isaiah 58.
He also raised vegetables and pecans to share with neighbors and friends.
Howard was an avid sportsman. He was the high scorer on the Atlantic Christian College basketball team, and was scouted by the New York Giants baseball team.
He loved to play golf with his family and friends.
He was known as a man with a big heart, who cherished his family, his home, his heritage and his land.
He recently enjoyed a "Ham family reunion" with many of his nieces and nephews, who fondly called him "Uncle Honey."
He loved gospel music and pretty piano playing.
At family prayer time, he always thanked God for his many blessings and for forgiveness of sins. It was his desire to be with Jesus and to be buried on the family farm, where he lived and thrived. His life was a true example of how one should live and love to the fullest.
A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Hamstead Acres Family Cemetery, 843 Dyke Smith Road, LaGrange, N.C., 28551.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Heritage Hall at Hamstead Acres, and other times, at the home of Jay and Ann Ham.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o treasurer Jackie Overbee, 402 Birch Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
Online condolences may be made at www.taylor-tyson.com, and the family invites you to share your memories of Howard there if you would so choose.
Arrangements are entrusted to Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service of Snow Hill.
