SNOW HILL — The Rev. Ned Douglas Sauls, 81, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, 2013, at Wilson Medical Center.

A native of Greene County, he was born June 10, 1932, the son of Elroy and Helen G. Sauls.

A retired minister, Rev. Sauls enjoyed a full career in the ministry, and also as an educator at Wayne Community College.

He loved his community, and was instrumental in founding Shine Fire Department of which he served as chief for a number of years, and also as chaplain for the North Carolina Fireman’s Association.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service, with the Rev. Frank Purvis officiating. Interment will follow at Snow Hill Cemetery.

The surviving family includes his wife, Nellie “Nell” Fields Sauls of the home; daughter, Cindy Sauls Atkinson and husband, Ed, of Farmville; sons, Ted Douglas Sauls and wife, Martha, of Snow Hill and Barry Douglas Sauls of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Ted Douglas Sauls Jr. and wife, Paula, of Snow Hill, Jason William Rouse of Snow Hill, Brian Douglas Sauls of Snow Hill, Elijah Sauls of Snow Hill and Jordan Perry Atkinson of Farmville; great-grandchildren, Kennedy Sauls, Hailey Gray Sauls, Zachary Darrell Sauls and Ivey Belle Atkinson; and special caregivers, Ellen Crisco and Ellen Ryals.

The family will receive friends Thursday prior to the service from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home, and other times, at the Sauls residence.
