HENRY F. BAYLES

PIKEVILLE -- Henry Ford Bayles, 90, Pikeville, N.C., passed away Friday evening.

He was the son of the late Ford and Docia Dumas Bayles, and was the husband of Kathleen Zigler Bayles.

He served in the United States Air Forcefor 25 years. Serving in World War II and Korea, in addition, he was one of the first chief master sergeants.

He was also a member of AARP, serving as an instructor for the driver safety program, and in 2007, he won the North Carolina Legacy Award for community service.

Memorial services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. in the chapel at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William Henry Bayles and wife, Sue, of Pikeville; a daughter, Jeanne K. Smith and husband, Larry, of Wilbrahan, Mass.; three sisters, Lula Mae Day, Dorothy N. Wooley and Shirley A. Godwin all of West Monroe, La.; five grandchildren, Billy Bayles of Boise, Idaho, Stephanie Smith of Fuqua-Varina, Jeffery Bayles of Greensboro, Brian J. Smith of Marshfield, Mass., and Cory L. Smith of Enfield, Conn.; 10 great grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A sister, Geraldine Young, preceded him in death.
