PIKEVILLE -- Mattie Wilkins Gooding, 72, died peacefully Monday morning at her home.

Born in the Grantham community, she was the daughter of the late Gardner and Bessie Cox Wilkins, and the wife of the late Carlton Gooding.

Funeral services will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with pastor Greg Stancil officiating.

The family will visit with friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

She will be interred in Musgrave Family Cemetery Friday morning at 11 a.m.

Mattie dedicated more than 36 years of her life as an LPN, serving patients at Wayne Memorial Hospital, and was a member of Antioch Original Free Will Baptist Church of Pikeville.

She is survived by two sons, Edward C. Gooding and wife, Teresa, of Jacksonville, N.C., and C. Keith Gooding and wife, Judy, of Pikeville, N.C.; a brother; Kenneth Wilkins and wife, Carolyn, of Texarkana, Texas; a sister; Judy Jones and husband, Jack, of Dudley, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bryan Gooding, Karen Martin, Heather Gooding and Jon Luke Gooding; and four great-grandchildren.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Antioch Original Free Will Baptist Church, 1407 Antioch Road, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.
