DUDLEY -- Emma Gray Johnson Newkirk, 81, passed away at her home Thursday.

She was born to the late Lena Worrells and George Ivory Johnson in Wayne County Oct. 9, 1931.

She was educated in the Wayne County public schools, and was joined in holy matrimony to Percy Newkirk Jr., who preceded her in death. This union was blessed with a devoted son, William Percell.

She worked in the Dudley post office, Dudley Bank and Dudley Christian Church.

She also was a caregiver for many who were sick or disabled.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, William Percell Newkirk; her brother, David Lee Johnson both of the home; four sisters, Rachel Ann Bryant of New Bern, N.C., and Leora, Frances Ann and Betty Lou Johnson all of New York; a grandson, William Jay Newkirk of East Orange, N.J.; a granddaughter, Kelly Lamarr of Irvington, N.J.; a great-grandson, William Jamir Newkirk of East Orange, N.J.; and an aunt, Alberta Uzzell of Eureka, N.C.

The visitation service will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and the homegoing celebration will be held Friday at noon. Both services will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church, 214 N. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., with the Rev. Antonia Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Memorial Cemetery in Dudley.

Final arrangements have been entrusted to J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations.
