TUCSON, Ariz. -- Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Karl J. Gerschutz, 56, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of New Bavaria, Ohio, died June 29, 2013, in Mount Lemmon, Ariz., the result of a cycling accident.

He was born Sept. 9, 1956, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Virgil A. and Eulalia "Lollie" (Horstman) Gerschutz.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a granddaughter and 14 brothers and sisters.

He graduated high school in 1974, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. Karl served 30 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 2007 as a chief master sergeant, and was senior logistics specialist for Raytheon.

An avid cyclist with the Seyboro Cyclist Club, he competed in many cycling races across the United States and Europe.

A devout Catholic, Karl actively volunteered in his community.

He was a graduate of Park University.
