JASPER D. EVANS

Jasper "J.D." Evans, 71, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.

J.D. was born in Oxford, N.C., July 4, 1941, to John H. Evans and Bessie Pettiford Evans.

J.D. was a graduate of Toler High School and Elizabeth City State University with a major in chemistry. He earned a master's degree in educational administration from East Carolina University, and also did graduate studies at Duke University.

He taught science and math at the former Carver High School in Mount Olive, and was assistant principal at Southern Wayne High School before becoming the director of Wayne County Public Schools Diagnostic Center.

J.D. served on the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, Wayne County Planning Board, Wayne County Public Library board, Social Services board, WAGES board and Smart Choice for Youth board.

He was a member of Toler Alumni Association, a lifetime member of Elizabeth City State University Alumni Association and a member of Waynesborough Park board of directors.

He was a member of Whetstone Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford. He worshipped faithfully at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Dudley.

J.D. is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley W. Evans; three sons, Jansen D. (Felicia), Dexter J. and Virgil; a daughter, Kateena E. Simmons; five grandchildren; three sisters, Ethel L. Webb and Shirley Fields (Edward) all of Oxford and Bessie Wilson (Frank) all of Arlington, Va.; and three brothers, Oscar Evans, Roy (Jean) Evans and Carnell Evans of Oxford.

He will lie in state at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home Friday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ at 215 Sleepy Creek Road in Dudley Friday, Dec. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral will be at Southern Wayne High School gymnasium, 124 Walter Fulcher Road in Dudley, Saturday, Dec. 22, at noon. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Arrangements are being handled by J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home, 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro.
