WILLIAM ATWOOD BEST

Retired Sgt. Maj. William Atwood Best was born Oct. 19, 1936, to the late William and Juanita Best of Eureka.

He graduated from Pikeville training school.

He retired after 30 years of service in the military.

One of his greatest accolades was being in the book "100 First Sergeant Majors of Color." He truly enjoyed the military.

Sgt. Maj. William Atwood Best was a member of St. James Disciples of Christ Church. He loved the church, the food service and the male chorus. He enjoyed the anniversary and dressing like the male chorus even after he was disabled. He truly enjoyed when they pushed him in with the group, and when they saluted him.

He leaves to mourn two sons, Rodney (Andrea) Best of California and Warren (Anita) Best of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Tanya Russell; two sisters, Shirley (Billy) Warren of Burlington and Helen (Gilbert) Ware of Capital Heights, Md.; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; an uncle, Silas Best; two aunts, Nancy Holmes and
Winnie Williams; cousins, who were like brothers and sisters, Ozzie Artist and Pecolia Miller; best friends, Harland and Lillie Gregory; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and lots of military friends.

The wake will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012.

The funeral will be Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. James Disciples Church, located at 514 Memorial Church Street, Fremont.

Hamilton Funeral Home is entrusted, located at 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
