CASSIE BARNES SCURRY

CHARLOTTE -- Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, God summoned the angel, longevity, to come down and take Cassie Barnes Scurry, at age 85, to her heavenly home.
Ms. Scurry passed from this life after a short illness at Carolinas Medical Center. She had been a resident of Emeritus Assisted Living Center in Charlotte.
Cassie was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Goldsboro, to loving parents, the late Herbert and Lola Barnes.
She attended Wake County public schools, and graduated from A&T University, where she met and married the late William Henry Scurry, the love of her life for 34 years. The couple married Aug. 18, 1951, and from that union three handsome sons were born.
Cassie worked until retirement as a social worker for the Erie County Department of Social Services of Western New York.
Cassie was predeceased by four brothers, Arnold Barnes, Cicero Barnes, Douglas Barnes and John Barnes; a sister, Maggie Barnes Harris; three sisters-in-law, Maggie, Dorothy and Marie; and a brother-in-law, John Harris.
Cassie was a longtime member of her family church, Barnes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Cassie leaves to honor and cherish her memory her devoted three sons, William Anthony Scurry (Margo), Jeffery Keith Scurry (Cynthia) and Chauncey Warren Scurry; seven grandchildren, William Anthony Scurry II, Mpho Dipalesa Notrem, Oji Scurry, Tammeric Itson-Scurry, Danielle Afton Scurry, Brittney Nicole Scurry and Adriana Nicole Scurry; a great-grandchild, Oji Scurry Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loving neighbors.
She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edna Barnes.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Barnes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 1108 Rosewood Road, Goldsboro. Her mortal frame will be laid to rest in J.J. Barnes Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Haskins Funeral Home.
The family will assemble at the residence, 405 Whitfield Drive, in preparation for the funeral procession.
