CAROLYN E. HEIL

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Carolyn E. Heil was born as Mattie Caroline Evans June 18, 1923, in Rose Hill.

She grew up in Goldsboro, where she won the title of Miss Goldsboro in 1940.

She was a retired federal employee of 35 years with Defense Construction Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio, where she attained a GS-11 position as an item manager before retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack K. Heil; sister, Elaine Kravitz of Maggie Valley; brother, Clyde Evans of Lima, Ohio; mother, Estelle King Evans in 1974; father, Clyde Evans Sr. in 1955; and son, Kenneth in April 2010.

Gene Fitzsimmons, who was the last love of her life, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by son, Don Heil of Columbus; stepsons, Jack Kerrigan Heil Jr. (Gayle) of Guilford, Conn., and Michael Heil (Mary Lou) of Franklin, Tenn.; son Ken's widow, Margaret Naegle Heil of Galloway, Ohio.

Mom raised three sets of sons, Mike and Jack in 1950s, Ken and Don in 1960s, and grandsons, Gary and David Heil in 1970s.

She is also survived by other grandchildren, Cherish (Don's) and Allison and Lindsey Heil (Ken's daughters); other grandchildren, Meredith, Brittany and Darren (Jack Jr.'s) and Michelle and Michael Jr. (Mike's).

She had a faithful Baptist upbringing and Christian living her entire adult life.

She was an avid dancer with Downtown Dance Club until recent years, where she gained friendship with kindred spirits, Norma Vance, Cloe Rose and Ardella Argubright Watson. Dorothy Hughes was her lifetime friend in Columbus, and stood up for her first marriage in 1946 to Harold Gallagher of Chillicothe.

A very private person, these friends were special to her. But she did prefer not to be seen while in poor health. She contracted a disease of the lung, and this compounded with breaking her left hip in North Carolina this summer, as well as breaking the right hip while in rehab led to debilitating health. She stopped eating, and her body rejecting all efforts to live.

Carolyn will be buried just west of her son, Kenneth, in Galloway Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Schoedinger Hilltop Chapel, 3030 W. Broad St., where funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012. Interment Galloway Cemetery, west of Columbus off of Alkire Road in Galloway.
