FRANCES SYKES GOODMAN

Frances Sykes Goodman, daughter of the late William O. Sykes and Gertrude Wynn Sykes, was born June 3, 1917. She departed this life Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011.

She attended Goldsboro City Schools, and graduated from Dillard High School. In 1935, she graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro.

At an early age, she joined Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she was faithful in attendance until her health prevented her from going. She served as the director for the junior choir and junior missionary for many years. She was also a member of the senior choir.

In 1937, Mrs. Goodman's career began in the Wayne County school system. During her career, she taught and served as principal at Barnes Chapel School and later taught at Dudley Elementary School and Grantham School, where she retired in 1979.

She was a member of the Wayne County Unit of the National Educational Association.

In 1947 she was married to the late William Clifton Goodman Sr., and they were blessed with a wonderful son.

She is survived by her loving, faithful and devoted son, William (Yvonne) Goodman Jr.
of the home; grandson, William (Beajeanna) Goodman III of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Detra (Timothy) Bickerstaff of Tyrone, Ga.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a host of relatives and friends; and two dedicated health care providers, Ann Crawford and Gail Worrells.

A celebration of her life will be held, Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 318 Denmark St., Goldsboro, with the Rev. Dr. Winford Galmon, pastor, officiating, and she will be laid to rest at Sykes-Croom Cemetery in Goldsboro.

A public viewing will be held Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends Friday from
10 to 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary.

Family and friends will meet at the residence at 9 a.m. to line up for the processional.
