MARGARET HANDLEY SMILEY

BOULDER, Colo. -- Margaret H. "Toni" Smiley passed Oct. 20, 2011, in Boulder, Colo.

A celebratory service and inurnment will be held at Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. She will be inurned with her late husband, Frank Smiley, who passed away in 2009. The Rev. Drew Clark of First Presbyterian Church will be officiating.

Toni was born in Goldsboro to Elizabeth Dorrity Handley and Albert H. Handley Sr., and grew up on Park Circle.

She graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1943.

While serving in the Civil Air Patrol, she met her love, Frank Smiley, of Wilson. They married in 1945. Toni and Frank raised four children together, and enjoyed moving around the country as Frank developed his career.

Toni will be remembered as a gentle, loving and energetic homemaker, who was active in various volunteer capacities in the communities in which the family lived, from Meals On Wheels to symphony fundraising.

She loved hosting get-togethers in their homes and working in her gardens.

Toni is survived by her children and their families, Randa and Tom Hopkins, and their sons, Robert and Steven, and their families all of Hickory, Marilyn and Paul Hartig, and their daughters, Julia and Kara of Boulder, Colo., Tona and Jeff Leitson, and their sons, Brian and Sam of Waterford, Mich., and Rick and Christi Smiley, and their daughter, Reagan, of Mount Airy.

Toni also leaves her sisters, Elizabeth and her husband, Bobby Gillikin, June and her husband, Charlie Hoyle, all of Goldsboro and Ruby and her husband, Manny Lewis, of Scotia, N.Y.; and her brother Albert Handley Jr., of Newborn, Ga.
