JAMES POWELL JR.

DUDLEY -- James Powell Jr. was born Jan. 22, 1939, to the late James and Sarah Powell in Wayne County.

Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, James quietly departed this life into a restful sleep at his home in Dudley.

He attended Carver High School in Mount Olive, and that is where he met his life partner and wife, Helen Bass Powell. James and Helen were happily married for 52 years. They united in holy matrimony May 4, 1959, and to this union five children were born.

At an early age, James was meant to be a business man. He later worked as a manager at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. He was a dedicated worker, who served 31 years consecutively at the Army Air Force Exchange Service.

James enjoyed fishing and working at his local store called JP's Stop and Shop, located on Durham Lake Road in Dudley.

He also enjoyed prepar-ing his famous pit-cooked barbecue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sarah Powell, and a daughter, Cotina Powell

He leaves precious memories with a wife, Helen Powell of the home; four children, Debra (Sherman) Davis of Panama City, Fla., James Anthony (Tonya) Powell of Garner, Joel Lee (Kathy) Powell of Dudley and Angela Michelle (Danny) Perry of West Haven, Conn.; four brothers, William H. Powell and Floyd Powell both of Dudley and Paul Powell and Tony Raiford both of Goldsboro; four sisters, Polly Bedford and Glendora (Carl Ray) Foust both of Dudley, Hilda Woods of Charlotte and Lula Faye Powell of Goldsboro; a sister-in-law, Minnie (Kenneth) Pearsall of Dudley; a brother-in-law, Charlie Bass of Lawrenceville, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Lucy Warren; an uncle, Fred (Priscilla) Powell of Garland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Delight Holiness Church, 693 Suttontown Road, Mount Olive.

A viewing will be held an hour prior to the service.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Powell's delicate temple, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Carver cemetery in Mount Olive for interment rites.

Mr. Powell's earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Powell and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
