Doris "Queen" Best Vann Pate, 80, went to be with her heavenly father Wednesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Ellen Waller Best.

Doris was retired from Hobbton Elementary School, Midway High School and Suttontown Rescue Squad.

She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and Goldsboro Woman's Club.

A service to celebrate the life of Doris will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sandy Schaller and the Rev. Gary Bailey officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Wayne Memorial Park.

Surviving are her husband, Hugh Pate; son, Kern Walton Vann Jr. and wife, Katie, of Dobbersville; grandchildren, Jason and Andrew Vann; stepson, Hughie Pate Jr. and wife, Tracy; sister, Geneva Best Strickland of Mount Olive; sister-in-law, Shelby Best of Mount Olive; stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Pate and Galloway Pate; and stepgreat-granddaughter, Callie Hinson.

Doris was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her first husband, Kern Walton Vann, and brother, Selby Best.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 2706 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or the charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
