PIKEVILLE -- Gertrude Hales, 90, 196 Hales Road, passed away Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends afterward.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Hales Family Cemetery in Pikeville.

Mrs. Hales was born Nov. 2, 1920, to the late Jackson and Daisy Sykes Evans.

She was a lifetime member of Fremont Holiness Church.

She is survived by four sons, Earl Hales and wife, Sarah, of Pikeville, Roy Hales and wife, Marie, of Pikeville, Carl Hales of Pikeville and Kenneth Hales and wife, Linda, of Grantham; five daughters, Viola King and husband, Jerry, of Goldsboro, Linda Person and husband, James, of Goldsboro, Christine Goetze and husband, Fred, of Illinois, the Rev. Shelia Price and husband, Gene, of Seven Springs and Vickie Tilghman and husband, Elton, of Goldsboro; a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Hales of Pikeville; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center for all the care given to Mrs. Hales.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hales was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Hales; a son, George Edward Hales; and a host of brothers and sisters.

Although flowers are welcome, memorial contributions may be directed to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
