JAMES WILLIAM HOWELL III

WILMINGTON -- James William Howell III, Wilmington, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was 64.
Jim was born Dec. 12, 1946, in Goldsboro, son of James W. Howell Jr. and Myde Smith Howell.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He retired as director of information technology for Reed's Jewelers.
He was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, and he received a master of business administration degree from the University of Iowa.
Jim's commitment to family was paramount in his life. Jim was a wonderful father and grandfather and a loving, devoted husband.
Jim loved watching sports and food programs on television, and he maintained an extensive library of fiction.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cantwell Howell; daughter, Meghan Howell Long; grandsons Caleb, Parker and Matthew all of Wilmington; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Cathy Howell of Goldsboro; his mother, Myde Smith Howell of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, Josiah Cantwell and his wife, Maria; sister-in-law, Theo Cantwell Thomson, her husband, Richard, and their son, Brad; and his mother-in-law, Nancy Cantwell.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Ave. South, 17th Floor, New York, N.Y., 10016, or St. Francis Memorial Garden at St. James Parish.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at St. James Episcopal Church, 25 S. 3rd St., Wilmington, N.C. Interment will follow in St. Francis Memorial Garden at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011.
